MTC students come from many different countries
with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Many had never
studied Chinese prior to coming to the MTC. Others began at MTC at the
intermediate or advance levels. Whatever
your reasons for studying Chinese and whatever your initial level, the
MTC will do all it can to ensure that you make
rapid progress. The MTC encourages student friendships among the
international student body and recommends friendships with speakers of
a language other than their own as a way to rely on Chinese to
communicate.
All classes at the MTC are conducted in Chinese.
Mandarin Phonetic Symbols, Yale Romanization, and Pinyin are used to
indicate the pronunciation of the characters. Teaching materials
include language texts written by MTC staff, as well as primary,
junior high and high school texts used in
the ROC. Courses focusing on Chinese typically used in newspapers,
radio and television programs are also available. Many classes use
audio or video cassettes and other non-textbook materials in order to
make studying at the MTC as interesting and varied as possible. The
center also offers courses using literary, historical and
philosophical texts.
There is no required course of study.
At
the end of your study period, the MTC can provide you or an academic
institution with a Record of Study/Transcript. This document is
available in English and states
the length of time you studied at the MTC, the number of scheduled and
completed hours of instruction, study materials and grades. After
commencing studies at the MTC, a student may apply for a Certificate
of Enrollment in English and
Chinese certifying the period of study which the student has been
currently enrolled for. All courses at the MTC are offered on a
non-credit basis. Thus, the MTC does not offer diplomas. Some foreign
universities grant credit, please confer with the related department
of your university if you are interested in receiving credit for your
studies at the MTC.
